Whilst driving on your learner licence in the ACT you must:
While operating a public vehicle, you must have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.
During your learner period, you will need to meet a required number of hours which must be recorded in your learner logbook. There are additional optional road safety courses that you may complete for additional credit towards your learner licence supervised driving hours.
You will need to satisfy a number of requirements before you can upgrade to a provisional licence.
Tip: The first 10 hours with a driving instructor count as 30 hours on your logbook.

*An ‘active’ licence is a licence that hasn’t expired, been suspended or disqualified. The Hazard Perception Test is an interactive test that is completed online. Users are required to follow the instructions, watch a video and determine when to click the ‘take action’ button.
**The first attempt is free however if failed, users will need to wait and pay a nominal fee to retry. The Hazard Perception Test is only available to users that have held their active ACT learner licence for at least 3 months. The Hazard Perception test is available at the Safe Plates Testing website. A practice test is also available.

Q: How do I book a Pre-Learner Driver Course?
A: You can book the Road Ready Course right here
Q: I did not/could not do the Read Ready course at school, or, I am not school based, what can I do?
A: Most ACT secondary schools offer the course as part of the year 10 program. For those who have already left school the course can be taken at our centre. Contact us for further details.
Q: Where do I go to do the course?

Q: When are the courses run?
A: Courses are conducted during weekdays, evenings and sometimes on weekends.
Q: What happens if I fail the course?
A: You must undertake the course again.
Q: How old must I be before I can get my learner licence?
A: You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
Q: How much does a learner licence cost?
A: A learner licence comes complete with a Road Ready pack, the pack consists of four handbooks, including a logbook and a set of ‘L’ plates. For Prices visit Access Canberra
Q: How long are my Road Ready Course and Knowledge Test Certificates valid for?
A: Both Certificates are valid for 2 years. If an applicant fails to obtain their learner drivers licence within 2 years of completing the Road Ready Course, they will be required to retake and successfully complete the Road Ready Course and Road Rules Knowledge Test before their learner licence will be issued. Expired ACT Learner Licence holders are only required to undertake and pass the Road Rules Knowledge Test again.
Q: I hold an overseas licence, does that change anything?
A: If you hold a licence from another country, you must first determine the status of your licence. Licences from other countries fall into two categories: approved and non-approved. You can check the status of your licence by clicking here.
Non-Approved Licence? If your licence is not listed on the above page or you do not meet the stipulated requirements, your licence is considered non-approved and you will need to complete additional steps to obtain your full ACT licence. Please contact us.
Q: Does the Road Ready Course assist in passing the Road Rules Knowledge Test?
A: The course does not cover the Road Rules Knowledge Test, but practice questions are available here.
Q: Does the Road Ready Course assist in obtaining a NSW learner licence e.g. Queanbeyan?
A: No, NSW have a totally different learner and provisional licence system to that of the ACT.
