  • Drive with your guardian or driving instructor for 100hrs in the next 12 months and complete your logbook.  The first 10 hours with a driving instructor count as 30 hours on your logbook.  Consider booking some SRR driving lessons now.
  • You may consider doing two more ACT Road Safety courses to make yourself a safer driver and receive bonus logbook credits.  These courses are the ACT Safer Driver (20hr bonus) and the ACT Vulnerable Road Users Program (10hr bonus).
  • With 100hr on your logbook after 12 months, you are now ready to take the final driving test.

Whilst driving on your learner licence in the ACT you must:

  • display ‘L’ plates at the front and rear of the vehicle;
  • ensure that a person holding a full Australian driver licence occupies the seat next to you;
  • have a blood or breath alcohol concentration of zero;
  • not tow a trailer exceeding 750kg GVM; and
  • not exceed posted speed limits.

While operating a public vehicle, you must have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.

During your learner period, you will need to meet a required number of hours which must be recorded in your learner logbook. There are additional optional road safety courses that you may complete for additional credit towards your learner licence supervised driving hours.

You will need to satisfy a number of requirements before you can upgrade to a provisional licence.

Tip: The first 10 hours with a driving instructor count as 30 hours on your logbook.

THE ASSESMENT

ACT Learner licence holders may choose to obtain their provisional licence by completing either:

  • the Competency Based Training and Assessment with an ACT Accredited Driving Instructor who will train and assess learners or
  • by booking a one-off practical driving assessment with a Government Assessor who will only assess learners.
  • The new requirements to obtain a provisional driver licence are:

    • hold an active* ACT Learner Driver Licence for a minimum of 12 months (6 months if aged 25 or older at the time of getting your ACT learner licence)
    • completed the online Hazard Perception Test** (can only be completed after 3 months of holding an active ACT learner licence)
    • completed the required driving hours and record in your paper logbook, and
    • successfully complete the one-off practical driving assessment with a Government Assessor or the Competency Based Training and Assessment through an Accredited Driving Instructor.

    *An ‘active’ licence is a licence that hasn’t expired, been suspended or disqualified. The Hazard Perception Test is an interactive test that is completed online. Users are required to follow the instructions, watch a video and determine when to click the ‘take action’ button.

    **The first attempt is free however if failed, users will need to wait and pay a nominal fee to retry. The Hazard Perception Test is only available to users that have held their active ACT learner licence for at least 3 months. The Hazard Perception test is available at the Safe Plates Testing website. A practice test is also available.
